CfP: CIDER-LERN Workshop

2nd Interdisciplinary Workshop for Junior Educational Researchers on October 8 and 9, 2018


Call for Participation and Contributions:

On October 8 and 9, 2018, the College for Interdisciplinary Educational Research (CIDER, and the Leibniz Education Research Network (LERN, organize their second interdisciplinary workshop for doctoral and postdoctoral educational researchers. It takes place at the Leibniz Association’s Headquarters in Berlin.

The general aim of the workshop is to extend the CIDER network to other LERN institutes and universities in order to facilitate interdisciplinary cooperation among educational researchers. We are happy to announce the following workshop formats:

  1. Keynote Lecture on “Causal Inference with Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs)” by
    Prof. Dr. Peter Steiner (University of Wisconsin-Madison)
  2. Plenary Debate on “Ability Tracking in Secondary Education” with the following guests:
    Prof. Dr. Herman van de Werfhorst (University of Amsterdam)
    Dr. Martina Diedrich (Institute for Educational Monitoring [IfBQ] Hamburg)
    Dr. Michael Becker (DIPF)
    Dr. Roxanne Korthals (Inspectorate of Education Netherlands)
  3. Presentation and Discussion of funding opportunities for junior researchers.
  4. Contributed Paper Sessions, where individual papers can be presented and discussed with the other researchers of the field.
  5. Contributed Thematic Groups, where several researchers join to present and discuss their work related to one common theme in educational research (methodological or substantial). Whether these are organized, for example, like a symposium or a plenary debate is up to the organizers of the groups.
  6. Contributed Poster Session, where research projects and publicly available datasets relevant to education research can be presented.


We are now accepting submissions for the paper sessions, thematic groups and poster sessions, as well as applications for participation without own contribution. All doctoral and postdoctoral researchers at LERN institutes and German universities are invited to apply by sending us a short statement of intent and a CV. If you would like to present a paper, poster or organize a thematic group, please add a short summary (1.500 characters maximum) to your application. We look forward to accepting up to 50 participants. There is no participation fee and all meals during the workshop will be covered. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at
